Gambia Cultural Group Performs At 37th Edition of Surajkund International Craft Mela

Eighteen members of cultural and samba comprising riti, tamal, kora, harlem, flute, balafon, song, dance, and sound from the Gambia are currently attending the 37th edition of Surajdkund International Cultural Craft Mela fair and festival in India.

The delegation is there at the invitation of the government of India to the Gambia. The group is among over 50 countries that are represented in this cultural jamboree which commenced from the 2nd and will end on the 18th February 2024.

The mission aims to strengthen cultural ties between The Gambia and India.

According to a source from the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), the Gambia team is headed by Mr. Sanna Jarju, Cultural Performing Officer at the NCAC.

The team currently in India is mesmerizing the crowd at the various locations of the festival with their melodious and interesting Gambian songs, dancing, and rhythm.

Jali Yusupha Suso, Jali Matar Jeng, Bubacarr Jallow flutist, and Jali Neneh Suso are among the top-known Gambian artists who are part of this delegation in addition to other performances from rural Gambia

The preparation for the Gambia participation was well handled, thanks to the effective coordination of the NCAC supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the India Embassy in Dakar.

Surajkund International Crafts Mela is a mosaic of India’s diversity. It is a joyous celebration of colours, crafts, music & rhythm, art, and culture at Surajkund in Faridabad, Haryana, during the first fortnight of each February.

The Mela is organized by the Surajkund Mela Authority & Haryana Tourism in collaboration with the Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture, and External Affairs.

The Mela celebrates the unique diversity of Indian traditions and culture in an ambiance, created to represent the ethos of rural India. Surajkund International Crafts Mela showcases some of the most exquisite handlooms and handicrafts in India. Handmade fabrics soaked in ethnic colors make an eye-catching display for visitors.

The 37th Edition of the Surajkund International Crafts Mela is poised to write history as it will witness unprecedented participation by foreign countries in a large number. With the participation of the United Republic of Tanzania (SCO) as the ‘Partner Nation’ the event will witness colours and cultures from across the globe with countries like Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Uzbekistan Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, Cambodia UAE to name a few. Similarly, Gujarat will participate as the ‘Theme State’ and spread its traditional vibes in this gargantuan, colourful, and global platform.
