Gambia: OIC Banjul Summit 4th-5th May

By Yunus S Saliu

The date has been set for the most awaited 15th edition of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit in Banjul, The Gambia.

The scheduled date is 4th to 5th May 2024 this was reemphasized on Thursday by the OIC Secretariat in Banjul after the date was formally announced by His Excellency President Adama Barrow on his return to The Gambia on Tuesday, 14th November 2023 from Saudi Arabia where he attended the Saudi-Africa Leaders’ Summit and OIC Extraordinary Summit on the war on Gaza.

Looking at the OIC Banjul Summit from a tourism angle, this will push for more meaningful travel to Destination Gambia from the latter month of April 2024 hence the Senior Officials Meeting is from 30th April to 1st of May. The Council of Foreign Ministers will precede the plenary meetings of the leaders from the 2nd to the 3rd of May 2024.

On 22nd February, the OIC Secretariat in Banjul held a Media Networking Event at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center, Bijilo – the venue of the Summit to update media personnel on the preparation so far. The event was well-attended.

However, The upcoming OIC Banjul Summit is the 15th edition of the Islamic Summit of Heads of State and Governments of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The Summit will bring together presidents, Kings, Sultans, Prime Ministers, Rulers, and other world leaders from the fifty-seven member countries of the OIC and beyond.

The theme for the Summit is Enhancing Unity and Solidarity Through Dialogue for Sustainable Development, the discourse will be “timely as the call for a united voice for the Muslim ummah is growing stronger considering the injustice and violence facing Muslims around the world today from Palestine, Myanmar, Sudan, and other parts of the world,” the Secretariat noted.

This Summit will be the first time “The Gambia hosts the Heads of State Summit of the OIC.” The goal for the Summit “as a country is to bring together the brightest and best of the ummah to find solutions to the challenges confronting the world.”

It is not just to host this one of the largest Summits in The Gambia only, Banjul OIC Summit will boost The Gambia’s “international standing as a key player in enabling the organization to pursue its objectives of uniting the ummah in line with The Charter.”

It gives “opportunity to showcase the wealth and beauty of the national cultural heritage of our beloved country – The Gambia. Also, showcase The Gambia’s huge investment, tourism, and MICE potentials.”

And it will also “expand our domestic economy and revitalize small and medium enterprises.”
