By Yunus S Saliu

Another moment of joy in the season as the Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard) on Wednesday received the TUI UK maiden flight for the 2023 winter tourism season at the Banjul International Airport with 185 passengers on board.

The TUI airbus flew directly from Manchester to the destination while the tourists were received at the tarmac by the senior officials of the GTBoard, tour operators, and others with entertainment from the cultural group from the tarmac till they departed to various hotels.

Mr. Foday Bah, Head of Marketing – GTBoard is confident about the season which kicked start in October noting that TUI maiden flights started with the TUI Belgium last week and now TUI UK “all these with other maiden flights to the destination, is a sign of hope for a good season.”

He noted that one of the GTBoard strategies for a successful season is their engagement with the tour operators and airlines regarding its collaboration on how they can increase their flight frequency and capacity by venturing into joint marketing activities to have better audiences.

This year, he said, the expectation is high with the belief that the figure will rise when it is compared to the past.

He discussed their concern for tourists to the destination while noting that the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Gambia Tourism Board put a lot of measures in place to make sure that these holidaymakers and tourists are well-secured and have nice holidays in the country.

Another development, he said, is the TUI Holland flying twice a week to the country has increased its flight frequency to the destination Gambia and it’s another plus to the industry as the arrival figure will be high, too, this year.

Mr Charbel Hobeika, Managing Director of the Gambia Tours and grand handler for the TUI airline noted that TUI is a worldwide and one of the largest tour operators in the world and the largest flying to the country from Manchester and Gatwick UK, Amsterdam, and Brussels.

The Gambia Tours Managing Director gave the breakdown of the TUI to the Gambia so far while expressing his impression about the airport personnel’s good service delivery.
